In brief

By October, fall is well underway across Canada. Toronto brings big shifts between morning and afternoon, especially on windy days; Vancouver gets plenty of rain; and Montreal often turns cold sooner, so hats, gloves and warmer layers are worth having on hand. This is a good time to make one fall-and-winter shopping list for Taobao, Tmall or other Chinese platforms. Sellers can send each order to your Cainiao warehouse in China, and you can consolidate the parcels for delivery to Canada. Here is what to buy for each city and how to arrange the shipment.

01

Start with what your city needs

The three cities have different priorities in October. In Toronto, focus on midlayers that are easy to take off and a jacket that blocks the wind. In Vancouver, sort out rain-ready outerwear, shoes and spare socks first. In Montreal, buy warmer midlayers, a proper coat and cold-weather accessories before the first sharp drop in temperature.

Take a quick look through your closet before placing an order and fill the gaps rather than buying several similar heavy pieces. A few basics that work together and are easy to add or remove between outdoors and indoors will usually be more useful.

VancouverFrequent rainy days that can leave clothing and footwear dampA hooded rain jacket, easy-to-change midlayers, spare socks and shoes suited to wet weather
MontrealEarlier cold, especially in the morning and at nightWarm base layers, a thick knit or fleece, a warmer coat, toque, gloves and thick socks

Shop for the everyday basics in China first

Taobao, Tmall and other Chinese platforms offer plenty of fall and winter basics. You can order tops, jackets, footwear, accessories and home items from different sellers, have every parcel delivered to your Cainiao warehouse in China, and send them to Canada together. Begin with pieces you will use every day, then add wind, rain or colder-weather items for your city.

There is no need to fill the cart with every category. Choose pieces that work with clothes you already own, have clear reviews and sizing information, and are easy to care for. When buying a jacket, leave enough room for a long-sleeve top or knit underneath.

CategoryWhat to considerOne quick check before ordering
Base and midlayersLong-sleeve tops, sweatshirts, knits, cardigans, fleece and light vestsCheck the size chart and buyer reviews, and make sure the pieces will layer with what you own

Toronto: choose layers you can add and remove

In Toronto, an October morning can feel very different from the afternoon, and a windy day can turn chilly quickly. When shopping on Chinese platforms, look first for an easy-to-remove midlayer and a practical wind-resistant jacket instead of going straight for the heaviest winter coat.

  • For the commute: pair a light long-sleeve top with a cardigan, zip-up knit or fleece that is easy to remove indoors.
  • Outerwear: add a wind-resistant everyday jacket; if you also need rain protection, choose an item whose listing clearly states that feature.
  • Footwear and accessories: one or two sets of midweight socks, light gloves and a toque will cover cool mornings, evenings and time spent waiting outdoors.
  • At home: a throw, warm indoor socks and slippers will handle most seasonal needs without buying a full set of winter items at once.
04

Vancouver: get your rainy-day essentials sorted first

Vancouver has plenty of rainy days in October, so keeping clothes and footwear dry is often more useful than simply buying thicker pieces. When shopping in China, put a hooded jacket, easy-to-change midlayers and spare socks in your cart before adding extra insulation.

  • Tops: keep two or three long-sleeve tops and midlayers in rotation so you have a spare when one is wet or in the wash.
  • Outerwear: prioritize a hooded rain jacket and do not assume it is rainproof unless the listing says so clearly.
  • Footwear and socks: add a few extra pairs of everyday socks, and read real buyer feedback about water resistance, grip and comfort before choosing rainy-day shoes.
  • At home: a washable entry mat, absorbent cloths and a simple drying rack are often more useful than bulky items you rarely use.
05

Montreal: buy warm essentials a little earlier

Montreal usually gets colder mornings and nights earlier in the season, so October is a sensible time to have warm base layers, a thicker midlayer, a toque and gloves ready. When ordering from China, start with transitional pieces you can wear right away, then decide whether to add heavier winter gear as the season develops.

  • Base layers: buy enough long-sleeve tops and leggings to rotate, choosing styles you already know you will wear regularly.
  • Midlayers: get a thick knit, fleece or warm vest early, and make sure it fits under the coat you already own.
  • Outerwear and accessories: prioritize a warm coat, thick socks, a toque and gloves before the first noticeably cold spell.
  • At home: add a throw, duvet cover or indoor footwear as needed, starting with the items you will use most often.

After ordering in China, ship everything to Canada with Cainiao

In the Cainiao app, set the country or region to Canada and copy the China warehouse address assigned to your account. Use that address when ordering on Taobao, Tmall or other Chinese platforms, and let each seller send its parcel to the warehouse. The parcels do not need to arrive at the same time; you can select them together after they have checked in.

It does not matter if your clothing, footwear and home items come from several different stores. Once everything you want to ship is in the warehouse, check the orders and basic item details, submit the parcels for consolidation, choose a currently available route and pay the international shipping charge.

  1. Select Canada in the Cainiao app, then copy the China warehouse address and recipient details shown for your account.
  2. Place your orders on Chinese shopping platforms and use the Cainiao warehouse as the delivery address for each seller.
  3. After the parcels arrive, check the order, quantity, colour and size. Deal with any obvious problem before consolidating.
  4. Select the parcels you want to send to Canada, submit the consolidation order, and choose a route based on the live price, expected timing and item restrictions.
  5. At the international-shipping checkout, if a Promo Code field appears, enter CANADA and confirm before paying that the 10% discount has been applied.
07

Make one last edit before consolidating

Fall and winter coats, shoes and home textiles can take up a fair amount of space. Before consolidating, decide what you will actually use in the next few weeks. Send the clothing and accessories you need first, and leave non-urgent bulky items for another shipment rather than adding products simply to make a larger parcel.

Before submitting the order, confirm that each item is allowed on the route you selected and use the route, charge and final total shown in the Cainiao app. If an order contains batteries, liquids, aerosols or another special item, check the current restricted and prohibited item rules before buying.

  • Consolidate parcels that have arrived and contain clothing or accessories you will use soon.
  • If an item has a size or colour problem, deal with it before adding the parcel to this shipment.
  • Decide whether each bulky home item is worth sending now, and do not buy duplicates just to fill the box.
  • Before paying, review the Canadian address, route, declaration details, discount and final total.
08

Check the local forecast before heading out

This list will help with general planning, but what you wear on any given day still depends on the local forecast, your commute and how easily you feel the cold. Remove a layer on warmer days, switch to rain gear during a wet stretch, and put a toque and gloves in your bag before a noticeable cold snap.

The Canadian government pages below provide climate and winter-weather information. When shopping, rely on what the product listing actually states rather than treating a photo as proof that an item is rainproof or warm.
